Medical Policy

Medicines will only be administered to pupils in school in cases of notified and recorded chronic illness or as required in long-term complaints such as asthma, diabetes or epilepsy. Even in such cases, medication will only be administered in accordance with Health Authority guidelines and as previously agreed by the Headteacher and parents of the pupil concerned.

In cases of a pupil recovering from a short-term illness who are receiving a course of antibiotics or other medicines, then it is the current view of the Chief Medical Officer for Health that they should not return to school until the treatment is complete and they are fully recovered. In the event of any difficulties then the Headteacher will discuss individual cases with parents, subject to advice from the Chief Medical Officer of Health and L.E.A. Medicines cannot be administered without the prior agreement of the Headteacher and only then subject to guidelines.

The complete Administration of Medicines Policy is included at the back of this booklet.
